Newcastle manager Eddie Howe says he does not have the money available to make a major signing this month and winger Miguel Almirón could leave the club.
Newcastle have not made any major signings since the arrival of Tino Livramento from Southampton for £32m in August 2023 and missed out on Marc Guehi last summer.
With the Premier League’s sustainability and profit rules continuing to cause a headache for clubs, Howe says meeting the spending restrictions that forced them to sell Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh remains a challenge.
Almirón is the latest player linked with a move to MLS this month.

Howe said: “Nobody wants to lose any player from our current team, especially in positions where we are a bit fragile. Why would we want to leave ourselves in that position?
“But when you have all the facts, sometimes you have to endure that short-term pain.
“I don’t know if this summer will be different and suddenly the panorama changes completely. I think that’s for another day. What I would say is that, hopefully, the future beyond looks very different.
“There’s not a ton of money waiting to be spent, it’s all about June 30 and making sure you comply with the rules by then. Obviously, if you spend money, you will have to make it back at a later date.”
Meanwhile, Howe and his players will focus solely on the task of trying to achieve a club-record tenth successive victory when they face his former team Bournemouth on Saturday.
Fabian Schar is a doubt due to illness, while goalkeeper Nick Pope is close to returning.
