Liverpool 4-1 Ipswich: Gakpo scores twice as Reds claim routine win

Liverpool maintained their six-point lead at the top of the Premier League with an easy victory over Ipswich this afternoon.

The visitors have conceded 10 goals in two games following their 6-0 loss to Manchester City last week and, in truth, were hopelessly outplayed at Anfield as Arne Slot’s men cruised to victory without going out of second gear.

Cody Gakpo continued his good season with a double, with Dominik Szoboszlai and Mohamed Salah also scoring.

Jacob Greaves closed the gap late on, but the 18th-placed Tractor Boys remain mired in relegation trouble.

Szoboszlai puts the Reds in front

Ipswich held firm in a low-key opening until Szoboszlai broke the deadlock with the first serious chance for either team after 11 minutes.

The Hungarian captain played against Ibrahima Konate, overcame a challenge and shot Low shot to the lower right corner.

It was too easy from Ipswich’s perspective as Szoboszlai found too much space to operate.

Kieran McKenna made five changes after the defeat to City, but one of the new arrivals, Wes Burns, lasted just 26 minutes before going down with what looked like a serious injury.

The Wales international was stretchered off and Ipswich’s afternoon took a turn for the worse when Salah doubled Liverpool’s lead nine minutes later.

Gakpo was the creator with a cross from the left and Salah did the rest, controlling the ball instantly before slotting past Christian Walton from a tight angle for his 100th Premier League goal at Anfield.

The score was 3-0 before the break and Ipswich offered no resistance.

Ryan Gravenberch finished off a dangerous ball from the right that Szoboszlai deflected into the goal. Walton made a good save, but Gakpo was on hand to grab the rebound.

Too easy for Liverpool

The second half was a walk for the locals, with the game practically over at half-time.

The intensity dropped, although Liverpool remained on top.

The fourth goal came in the 66th minute with Gakpo again in goal. Trent Alexander-Arnold made a trademark cross and the Dutchman got ahead of his marker to beat Walton.

Alexander-Arnold was almost called into action but his deflected attempt from 25 yards went over the post with Walton beaten, before going even closer four minutes later with a shot that bounced off the right post.

Alisson was finally called into serious action after 84 minutes with a smart save to deny George Hirst, but the Brazil international was beaten in the last minute, Greaves heading debutant Julio Encisco’s corner into the net.
